Product Durability in Markets with Consumer Lock-in

چکیده

This paper examines a two-period duopoly where consumers are lockedin by switching costs that they face in the second period. The paper’s main focus is on the question of how the consumer lock-in affects the firms’ choice of product durability. We show that firms may face a prisoners’ dilemma situation in that they simultaneously choose nondurable products although they would have higher profits by producing durables. From a social welfare perspective, firms may even choose an inefficiently high level of product durability. Journal of Economic Literature Classification Numbers: L13, D21

Designing an Economic Repetitive Sampling Plan in the Presence of Two Markets

In this paper, we develop an optimization model for the economic design of repetitive sampling plan in the presence of two markets. The process under consideration produces a product with a normally distributed quality characteristic with unknown mean and known variance. The quality characteristic has a lower specification limit. The quality of the product is controlled via lot-by-lot acceptanc...

A Model of Endogenous Quality Management

This paper is concerned with product quality, defined as a kind of durability. Existing models of product quality (in the sense considered here) depend on the idea of signaling, itself driven by an informational asymmetry dictated by “Nature.” The paper proposes an alternative approach, which endogenizes the quality management process. A model is developed that is applicable to the markets for ...

Hedonic Pricing under Uncertainty: A Theoretical Consumer Behavior Model

A model of consumer behavior has been formulated by using an additive utility function and the hedonic pricing approach, in a virtual market. Since, there is a time lag between ordering and purchasing products (goods and services) online and receiving them, it means the consumer makes decision under uncertainty. The level of satisfaction with products with distinctive characteristics is describ...

Social Cognition and the effect of Product Quality on Online Repurchase Intention

An electronic commerce marketing channel is fully mediated by information technology, creating information asymmetry (i.e., limited information). Such asymmetry may impede consumers’ ability to effectively assess certain types of products, thus creating challenges for online sellers. Signaling theory can aid in the understanding of how extrinsic cues—signals—can be used by sellers to convey pro...

The Limits of Planned Obsolescence for Conspicuous Durable Goods

An extensive body of literature argues for the benefits of planned obsolescence, the strategy of designing products with low durability to induce repeat purchases from the consumers. Yet, some firms avoid planned obsolescence and instead offer products with high durability. In this paper, we offer a demand-side rationale for a high-durability product design strategy: exclusivity-seeking consume...
